Mellon All-Claremont Professor of Humanities at the Claremont Colleges, has written extensively on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. His book on the origins of the Fifth Amendment won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969, and he is editor of the four-volume Encyclopedia of the American Constitution. JOYCE APPLEBY, a former student of Douglass Adair, is professor of history at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her latest book is Capitalism and a New Social Order: The Republican Vision of the 1970's.

Except for those occasional moments when constitutional law is applied to intricate legal cases in our courts, this oldest written instrument of government is simply celebrated.
