I would prefer to extend it to the wider sphere of representation. The main relationship of the subject is to what may be called "representanceU-that is, the multiple ways in which the basic forms of messages are represented, reproduced, and transformed trying to articulate (more or less) compatible expressions, which in turn help their transmission from one type to another, according to the tensions, censorship, achievements, emergencies that are taking place in the psychic apparatus. Here I align myself with Bion, who said that psychoanalysis relies on an experience that is not a sensuous experience. According to Freud-I do not want to read quotations-the object is born out of experience but is mainly a construction of the mind. We try to grasp its function through the way it appears in the analysis, or in the analyst who has to analyse. It is not by chance that analysis deliberately deprives itself of the resources of the senses, except the senses linked to language. The way the ego has to perform its tasks when it has to deal with the object is quite different from when it has to deal with the drives.
