"Amongst Women" tells the story of Michael Moran, a bitter, ageing Irish Republican Army (IRA) veteran, and his tyranny over his wife and children, who both love and fear him. In 852 AD the Vikings landed in Dublin Bay and established a fortress. This collection is therefore oppositional to much of that mainstream.

The confidence of the show may come from a very successful assimilation by British Asians to the standard forms of the language. This act admitted Irish and English Roman Catholics to Parliament and to all but a handful of public offices. From the 1980s onward, however, there has been an unprecedented influx of undocumented Irish immigrants, especially to such traditionally Irish centers as New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. The poetry of the First World War is often regarded as peculiarly ‘English’, but many of the soldier-poets had a conflicted relation to ‘Englishness’: Sorley was Anglo-Scottish, Rosenberg and Sassoon (on his father’s side) were Jewish, Ledwidge was Irish, while Owen, Jones and Thomas could trace their recent family history to Wales.
